This is the David Initiative’s aspiration: equip the parish music ministers and together, we can disciple the youth and help bring the body of the Church into a more powerful encounter with the Mass.
We celebrate David for his courage as a warrior and his strength as a King, but we should never forget that before that he was a singer, a composer. The songs that David wrote were beautiful; they were passionate. They were powerful; they were moving.
Sadly, these are not the words we would typically use to describe the music we hear at Sunday Mass.
Enter The David Initiative. They’re here to do something about the situation.
They believe that music has the power to reach people, that it can lead people into deeper prayer. They believe that music should be befitting of the liturgy, where heaven touches earth.
But they also know this won’t just happen on its own.
So, they’researching for “Davids,” for young people who will rise up and lead a revival of liturgical music. And they’re going to do everything they can to help them on the way.
They’re hosting the Win a Music Ministry Makeover Competition.Music ministry groups from across the United States are invited to send in a live performance video of an original song (or, in honor of the initiative’s namesake, a reworked psalm or traditional hymn is also welcome).
The Grand Prize Winner will receive an entire set of new musical instruments needed to launch a parish music program, an all-expenses paid trip to lead music for mass at AbbeyFest 2017, a recording session at Paper Castle Records, and media exposure from 4PM Media, who will follow them throughout the year documenting their experience.
In addition, the top 3 finalists will receive monthly mentorship for a year from greats in contemporary Catholic music ministry like Robert Feduccia, Bob Rice, Dave Moore, Shawn Williams, the D’Amrosio family, and others.
