In the wake of the “Me Before You” movie premiere, it seems almost everyone has something to say about it. Many Christians have responded in outrage: It’s glorifies euthanasia, they say. In a beautiful piecefeatured here at Aleteia, 11-year old Ella Frech – who happens to be the current number two ranked professional female wheelchair skater in the world – ask the question, Dear Hollywood, why do you want me dead?
Others, while applauding Frech’s attitude and her zest for life, reminded us that situations like the one in the move do exist. “The struggle is real,” so the saying goes. These people, like Dovie Eisner– who was born with a neuromuscular disease, praise the film for highlighting very real issues.
And then there’s Grammy nominee Andra Day’s “Rise Up” music video directed by M. Night Shyamalan (known for his films “The Sixth Sense” and “Signs,” among many others). The video is a good middle ground: It doesn’t paint a rosy picture of a disability like paralysis. It follows a couple as they prepare to go out on a date, and what that looks like when of the two is disabled. You can see the pain in their eyes at times, but also joy.
The message of the video? Love conquers all. It doesn’t take away the mountains, but it does give you the strength to climb them.
