Once I was seven years old and my mama told me to be the kindest girl that I could be.

19 year-old English singer/songwriter Leah Guest went from virtually unknown to internet sensation in a matter of months. Her rewrite of Lukas Graham’s “7 Years” has 6.8 million views and counting.

Though you’ll recognize the melody and the “Once I was seven years old,” “once I was eleven years old” lines, Guest’s cover is a far cry from the original song, which paints a much bleaker picture.

It’s not a correction of the original. Good or bad, “7 Years” is Lukas Graham’s story; and for Leah Guest it was also an invitation to tell her own story. And it is a beautiful story, of a woman who was strengthened and encouraged in her childhood by those around her. It’s worth a watch.
