Pope Francis to Make Appearance at DC Event

John Burger - published on 06/07/16

Personal video will be highlight of marathon day of prayer for the nation

In an event that will surely remind many of his historic visit to Washington, D.C., Pope Francis is scheduled to appear at an evangelical prayer rally on the National Mall in July.

But his appearance will be on the big screen.

The Pope will deliver a personal video message to a gathering on the National Mall. The July 16 event, called Together 2016, is an all-day event bringing Christians together to pray for the nation. The organizer, PULSE, a student-led evangelism movement, is hoping for upwards of 1 million people. Some 40 well-known musicians, authors, pastors and speakers, including Matt Maher, Hillsong United, and Michael W. Smith, are on the schedule for the 12-hour event.

“That His Holiness would choose to speak into this historic day is a testament to the urgency and the need for followers of Jesus to unite in prayer for our nation and our world,” said Nick Hall, founder of PULSE. “We are humbled and honored by his involvement and are eager to share his message with the crowd that gathers at Together 2016.”

Hall spoke about what he perceives as the need for prayer during this election year.

“The times call for this moment. It is time to gather on a large scale and draw our attention back to where it really matters. Our hope and our help are found in Jesus, not in political leaders. We are going to come together, seek God, pray for our nation and pray for unity. Our goal is to gather as a unified front, seeking Jesus and change for our nation through prayer and worship,” he said.

Organizers have arranged for some 8,000 service opportunities within a 100-mile radius of Washington during the week before and after “Together 2016,” reported Seasons of Grace.
