I believe in the depths of my heart that beauty can save the world.
I found myself in the most beautiful place in the world thanks to the promptings of a good friend. He brought me to the bed and breakfast of his grandmother in Sintra, Portugal; her warm smile and heartfelt greeting revealed a tender soul. She offered me a cup of tea and invited me to sit down. “I want to share my conversion story with you,” she said, and then proceeded not to sit down next to me, but made her way across the entrance hall to the baby grand piano where she took her seat.
I had never heard music speak to me before that moment. I had heard many beautiful instrumental pieces; I grew up in a home where music constantly filled the space between the walls. It would put me to sleep, or move me to dance, or lead me into prayer, but it had never spoken to me like the piece I heard in that entrance hall in Sintra. The old woman shared her story using only the ebony and the ivory. “She’s never left anyone with a dry eye,” my friend told me, and I knew it was true.
Why do I tell this story now? Because today’s artist has this same gift: to speak with music where words fail us, to delve into the deepest mysteries of our faith running his fingers across the keys.
His name is Jimmy Mitchell, and he travels the country to share his personal testimony interwoven with original piano compositions. His first album, Through it All, is a journey through salvation history, from creation to Pentecost. The song “Origins” in the video above is the opening track on the album.
Now Jimmy is preparing to record his second studio album Love(An Epic), twelve piano compositions with string quartet accompaniment. He describes the record as “the journey of love between any lover and his beloved. Man and woman. God and mankind. Soul and vocation. It is the overflow of the last ten years of my own journey and discernment.”
Jimmy is currently running a campaign to record his next album with Love Good Music (if you haven’t heard of them yet, read the whole story here).
