Ascension Presents brings us a reflection by Jeff Cavins on this Sunday’s readings — Mercy Sunday. In the Gospel, we see Jesus in search of the disciples, who are behind locked doors, afraid. But even locked doors can’t keep Jesus out. He challenges his disciples and gives them peace — shalom, says Cavins, which is a deep contentment, a wholeness. Many of us are locked behind doors of fear and shame, and Jesus penetrates those locked doors. Once he gives us his peace, he commissions us. If we follow Jesus, we will experience the cross and it will lead to the resurrection. Cavins encourages all of us to seek out the Church, walk through the doors of mercy and open up our locked hearts to receive the mercy of God.
