What does it mean when someone claims, “I’m spiritual, but not religious?” Fr. Rob Ketcham, the chaplain of St. John the Baptist Diocesan High School in New York, tackles the question by tying it into March Madness.
Humans are not simply spiritual beings, he says, we are physical beings. And we are driven to want to express hidden mysteries outwardly, with and through our bodily actions. Falling in love can teach us this; so can sports. This coming weekend, as things intensify with March Madness, we have something else to pay close attention to: the Holy Triduum, where we will see how Jesus demonstrates that he is both spiritual and religious.
