Teresa Peterson tells the story of how this song came about.
Psalm 42:2–“As the deer longs for the streams of water, so my soul longs for you, O God.”
Psalm 42:8–“Here deep calls to deep”
“ A group of friends of mine were all praying Lectio Divina one night and I had Psalm 42:8 jump out at me. Afterward, I found “deep calls to deep” kept ringing through my head for days. It was a time of great resurrection for me artistically. I had walked away from music a couple years back and after moving to Philadelphia with my husband, the Lord started calling me out of the tombs. He was restoring my vision. Calling me out of the pit. It was time to start creating again. When I began writing for this recent project, I really struggled with whether or not I could still write or whether or not it would be any good. I remember praying countless rosaries, chaplets and holy hours begging God for the courage to trust and to keep saying yes to Him. Gathering up enough courage to sit down at the piano, this psalm rang through my head again. I grabbed my Bible, prayed with Psalm 42 and “Calling Me Higher” simply flowed out.”
We cannot run from our vocation if we truly want to be happy. For our vocation is a plan in God’s mind designed especially for each one of us, fitted to the way we are, with our talents, our character, our predispositions. It’s the path that brings us to the fullness of life, the essential element which serves in leading us to happiness.
And God calls us. He calls us to soar even higher.
And us? Do we have the courage to be happy?
“Calling Me Higher” is from the album by the same name, released in 2015.
