Faith in Star Wars: Fr. Roderick Vonhögen Tutors a Sci-Fi Agnostic

Elizabeth Scalia - published on 12/18/15

Catechesis is essential in matters of faith, and also in matters of space fiction

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, a geeky husband invited his wife to many, many viewings of various episodes of the Star Wars saga. The wife, unformed in sci-fi appreciation, never made it past the first reel of any adventure, usually falling asleep at the initial mention of a fictitious planet or dive-bar. Over time, the husband and wife became estranged on the topic of science fiction, reuniting only once in the course of decades, during the brief but spectacular space disturbance known as Firefly. But then the wife fell back to sleep, remaining unwakeable, even during the dreaded time of the Jar Jar, when the whole world engaged in disdainful mockery of the Binks.

Into this hopeless circumstance stepped a hero, a man dressed in black, with a light saber discretely nearby. His name:

. His charge: bring enlightenment-unto-wakefulness to the unfortunate and unformed woman who is nevertheless called to spousal-space-unity; catechize her to the mysteries of the Force and the Wookie as one would catechize a child at Mass, in order to increase her appreciation for what she is seeing and experiencing, that she might grow in understanding and so desire to participate more fully in the wonders of Deep Space Morality Tales.

There is no one better with whom to talk Star Wars than Father Roderick, and he was kind enough to offer something of a tutorial in Star Wars basics, here, in an effort to get me on track with All Things Skywalker, that I may no longer be a stranger in a world full of people who seem to instinctively get what has eluded me these three decades.

Sadly, I hadn’t thought to use my newer laptop over my six-year-old desktop, so my side of the thing is a bit fuzzy and ungainly, but I am too, so that’s justice. Please note I did see a Wookie/Ewok connection, early on, for which Father Roderick — extremely kind to me in my ignorance — awarded me “10 Geek Points!” We had a lot of fun with this chat and hope you like it too!
