Jenny Oaks Baker grew up in Salt Lake City, Utah, and attended the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia and then the Juilliard School in New York City for her masters degree. She has performed with orchestras and choirs throughout the country, including the National Symphony Orchestra, the Pittsburgh Symphony, the San Diego Symphony, the Utah Symphony and the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.
Concerned about attacks on religious liberty in the United States, the violinist says she wanted “to pay tribute to religion and visually show how worshiping God blesses the lives of people throughout America.”
“The song choice ‘Yesterday’ was intended to help people hearken back to their own roots and the roots of this great country, which was founded by great leaders like George Washington who knew how vital religious freedom is to preserving freedom and maintaining a healthy society,” says Baker. “Religious Freedom is close to my heart and I’m so grateful to live in a place where the freedom to worship God ‘according to the dictates of our own conscience’ is valued and protected. I pray that this will continue through the generations, for faith in a higher power, and for the ability to act upon this faith.”
The quote at the end of Baker’s video is by her father—Elder Dallin H. Oaks, who was honored two years ago by the Beckett Fund for this efforts to promote religious liberty. The late Cardinal Francis George of Chicago presented the Canterbury Medal to Elder Oaks in New York City.
