A battle is brewing in a northern California high school where parents discovered that an employee of a porn shop and a so-called “pleasure activist” are teaching sex ed at the school.
FoxNews.com is reporting that the sex ed program at Acalanes Union High School in Lafayette, California is being taught by Planned Parenthood employees. Parents were not pleased with the idea of the nation’s largest abortion provider teaching sex ed to their children and launched a petition in December demanding to know who was teaching the classes. They also petitioned the district to develop and implement its own curriculum as well as a “preview course” that would be offered to parents by the same person who is teaching their children. The purpose is to allow parents to obtain enough information to make an informed decision about whether or not to allow their child to attend.
With the help of the Pacific Justice Institute, a law firm dedicated to protecting parental rights, they discovered that at least two of the people teaching their children had “questionable day jobs”.
“One instructor leads a ‘pleasure workshop’—in which the use of sex toys are demonstrated at a store called Good Vibrations in nearby Berkeley. It was not immediately clear if the instructor told students of the store’s offerings,” Fox reports.
“They also discovered that a second instructor at Acalanes High School who was an education manager for Planned Parenthood Northern California, had boasted that she was a ‘pleasure activist’ online and also commented on her twitter feed that she attended the CatalystCon pornography conference. The conference attracts members of the porn industry and has workshops and panels that discusses topics like using explicit instructional media for sex ed, the history of sex toys and how to effectively share your sex life on the stage and on the page. She has since taken down her twitter page which allegedly contained scores of other tweets that contained vulgar language.”
What does the district have to say for itself?
“Some schools in the District have utilized Planned Parenthood educators for well over ten years,” the district said in a statement. “The regular classroom teacher participates in the lessons and assists in the discussion facilitation. The instruction is age-appropriate using objective and medically accurate information. The value of abstinence is emphasized as it is identified as the only certain way to prevent pregnancy and sexually transmitted infection. We believe the instruction builds student skills for making and implementing responsible decisions about sexuality…”
They go on to remind parents that are “given prior notification of the presentation, the topics to be covered, and informed that a Planned Parenthood educator will be presenting to the students. Parents are able to opt their students out from the instruction.”
Brad Dacus of the Pacific Justice Institute reports that the two instructors mentioned above will no longer be teaching at the school but the district still refuses to say who will be doing so in the future.
“This school has continually displayed a lack of accountability,” Dacus said. “The two other schools in the district have chosen not to use Planned Parenthood and they are not having any problems.”
It’s inconceivable to me that such highly educated people could possibly fall for Planned Parenthood’s inane platitudes about caring for the sexual health of youth and actually hire a company who is so deeply invested in the sex industry to teach sex ed to children. Young people are their largest market! Of course they’re going to encourage them to engage in activities that will keep them in business! This is a classic “no-brainer”.
It’s also the reason why parents need to demand accountability from their childrens’ schools, particularly in the area of sexual education. Too many schools hide the content of these programs or only show parents portions of it, such as Acalanes who only informed parents about the “topics” to be discussed. Parents need to see it all and if a school is not forthcoming, they should gather other like-minded parents into a group that will put pressure on administrators to respect their rights to determine how their children are educated.
