George Weigel writes on the errors of
Kowtowing to Moscow in the Church’s push for ecumencial advancement, stating, "For so long as the leaders of Russian Orthodoxy aspire to hegemony within Orthodoxy, claim to be the sole legitimate heirs of the baptism of Rus’ in 988, and act as agents of Russian state power in world politics, for just that long will Russian Orthodoxy be a serious obstacle to a more unified Orthodox world and to reconciliation and full communion between Catholicism and Orthodoxy." ASQUITH’S COMMENT
In George Weigel’s piece on the errors of
Kowtowing to Moscow, he concludes by suggesting that,  "The Vatican’s ecumenical default positions badly need re-setting. And that re-set must begin with a clear-eyed view of recent Russian Orthodox prevarications and aggressions. Nothing will be gained, ecumenically speaking, from further kowtowing to the self-styled “Third Rome.”" And I agree with him. However, there is (so it seems) a determined "push" in all directions, to see the gaps between East and West, and specifically Rome and Moscow, closed (or at least much closer together). This, I fear, is a political agenda and one which I believe is gaining confident momentum at a time when the Church is weary of losing its "power." I do not think we will see an
overnight declaration of unity between Moscow and Rome but I do believe we will see greater unity than ever before, and that this will begin to manifest sooner rather than later.
