The "Great War" gave birth to the United States Bishops' Conference

July 28, 2014 marked the 100th anniversary of the start of World War I.

U.S. Bishops created the National Catholic War Council in 1917 that made it possible for U.S. Catholics to support their troops by making monetary contributions and committed personnel to provide spiritual care and recreation for servicemen during the war
