Poll Could Mean Good News for Pro-Life Candidates

Politico.com surveys voters in competitive congressional races.

The upcoming midterm elctions could see more pro-life candidates sent to Congress, according to a new poll.

The survey, conducted by the polictical news website Politico.com in the most competitive House and Senate races, as ranked by the University of Virginia’s Center for Politics, found that 80% of likely voters favor some kind of restiction on abortion.

Only 19% of the 867 likely voters surveyed said they favored no restrictions on legal abortion. But 35% said they favored a right to abortion with some restictions, such as parental notifications for minors and a cut-off on late-term abortions, and 34% expressed support for "nearly a total ban," with exceptions for rape, incest and the life of the mother. Eleven percent said they favor a ban in nearly all circumstances, and 1% declined to answer.

Seventy percent said the issue was important to them in determining who to vote for.

Respondents, interviewed in both English and Spanish through the Internet during the first two weeks of May, were almost evenly divided according to party: 34% identified themselves as Democrats, 39% as Republican, and 26% Independent or unaffiliated.

As to political leanings, 41% of respondents considered themselves conservative, and an equal number considered themselves moderate, while 17% saw themselves as liberal.

Though the poll found low ratings for President Obama’s job performance and a dim view of Congress, Democrats fared slightly better: 35% said they approve of the job Democrats are doing in Congress, while 31% gave Republicans a thumbs up.

But 41% said they would vote for the Republican candidate, as opposed to 34%, with 25% saying they don’t know.

Nearly half—48%—said they would like to see Obamacare repealed, and 89% said the healthcare reform law would be an important factor in their voting this year.

The issue of same-sex "marriage" received almost equal support and opposition, with 48% supporting it and 52% opposing.

The poll had a margin of error of 4.1%.
