VIDEO INTERVIEW: Brazilian Church Challenged by Evangelicals & Irreligious

Brantly Millegan - published on 02/22/13

Portuguese Aleteia Editor Alexandre Ribeiro gives his inside perspective

The New York Times recently ran an article on the changing Catholic Church in Brazil called A Laboratory for Revitalizing Catholicism. According to the article, in 1970, 90% of the population self-identified as Catholic. Today, that number has dropped to 65%, with large gains made among evangelical Christians and those who claim no religion at all. One way the Church has responded is with the rise of charismatic preacher-priests, who lead Catholic mega-churches in an evangelical style.

The editor of the Portuguese edition of Aleteia, Alexandre Ribeiro, lives just outside São Paulo, Brazil and took a few minutes to share with us his inside perspective of the situation.
